totally pointless

I actually saw Avatar, the movie, at the Movies ... big kinda auditorium with lots of quite comfortable chairs, to hang out in while watching a two and a half hour long movie together with a bunch of unknown people, about fifty of them this particular evening. *sigh* ... why do you do some of the things you do? Really... Somewhere I´d read something about this Avatar and had come to the belief that this was a movie worth watching, it was supposed to be a contribution to the environmental debate, it was supposed to show the consequenses when you severely exploit nature.

Well yeah, maybe it did, but the whole thing developed into some thick fairytale filled up with cliché characters, so unbelievebly dull. One typical hero, one typical heroine, one typical moron evil bad kind of guy with a certain need to kill everything that moved, including big trees ....

I ended up doing this for my daughter, and that was a reason better than most, but I was disappointed because I had expectations, which I´d already known but forgotten about not to have, and now again learned not to have when going to the movies ... *breathing* ... paying about 15 dollars a head for being bored, which has been one of the reasons why I haven´t been to the movies since I don´t know for how long, like for several years or decades even ... wow....

... well now I´ve been there and daughter is very pleased and my mates on Facebook compare it, Avatar, with the Pocahontas movie by Disney and that´s not a very far fetched comparison if I may say, and thanks to that I had myself a totally pointless blogpost this late evening. Not too bad.

  1. Its about time someone else hated Avatar with me! Sheesh! My boy friend made me see this not once but TWICE!!!!!! I told him before the second time "boy you sure are paying a lot of money for me to take a nap!" And thats exactly what I did! I snoozed the entire 2 1/2 hours!

  2. Yes you´re right, it´s kind of boring. Wouldn´t say I hate it though ... but they say it´s nominated for an Oscar that I can certainly not understand.

  3. I have thus far avoided watching the movie. I will not pay that much money to see a cliche movie in the theater. I might not even watch it on video.

If I ever do, I will make sure to keep my expectations low (just like with everything else everyone talks up). Everyone seems to think it's the greatest movie (of the year? of the decade? ever?). I highly doubt it.

I read a review of it that was more in line with my thinking. Basically just another silly movie with "natives" who cannot fight without a non-native leader and so on. I don't remember who wrote it or where it was. I will try to find it. I'm sure you will agree with a lot of what was said (perhaps not all of it, but a good portion).

But, think of it like this: at least you got a couple of hours of "bonding" with your daughter, even if it was in silence watching a ridiculously cliche movie. lol.

  4. That´s what it was all about, a big fight, with lots of striking scenery and visual effects ... that eventually became boring. The political message was weak and somewhat blurred.
Well my daughter was very pleased, and at the end of the day that´s what really matters.

  5. Avatar had complex villain. Jake never got to answer the colonel's question, 'You still remember what team you're playing for?' and then near the end the 'How does it feel like betraying your own race?'

He's a manly man who follow orders. He tear- gased home tree before firing. After they're done with it he simply said 'Good work'. He doesn't enjoy what he does, he's just a good soldier. He even fulfiled his promise of giving Jake's legs back. In no way was he portrayed as 'one typical moron evil bad kind of guy with a certain need to kill everything that moved'.

Eitherway the likes of you would hate him, because he can take it. He's Avatar's Dark Knight.

Even Selfridge was a victim of the system. Many are like him. Convince yourself that you don't care about this hippie enviromental bullshit, yet that pensive sigh when the troops march out. Was my favourite moment.

Above all, even if there was no story/characters/setting how so ever, I'm suprised how the beauty of Pendora didn't move you. It should have, made me snap for a second and thought Earth sucks.

In conclusion, friend, buy the DVD and rewatch. You missed out.
